Comics
Comics are my world, I love drafting them, drawing them, and sharing them. The actual comics are hosted elsewhere, and so this gallery space is dedicated to art pieces that either did not fit into the comic itself, or are their own stand-alone illustrations.
DPD: Arcane Affairs

DPD: Arcane Affairs alternative cover
I made this cover for DPD some time ago (2020), but ended up replacing it since the character designs had changed.

Stygian Inspection
I can't explain this one! Spoilers!

On the way North
Sometime in 2021 I began redesigning the characters in DPD: AA , with Mimsi getting the most changes. This included her hairstyle and the fact that she had a motorcycle. Very important.

Walking Through Grass
Another redesign concept of Mimsi - this is the one I chose to work off of since it felt the coolest.

Garden
Watercolor. This one is rather old - but I still like it.

Radium Women
Book 1, Chapter 2 cover. Watercolor.

Ermine
Although Ermine was demoted to tertiary character very early on in the script - she is still one of my favorites. She has some mystery of her own to uncover.

Woods
During the development of DPD: AA I had trouble pinning down the style. This was one of the last tests I did - and I think it ended up as one of my favorites of John.
The Hearth and the Stone

The Hearth and the Stone
Book cover for TH&TS. I wanted to try and make it look like a mix of my style and tapestry-esque. Hopefully this idea shines through.

Moss
This image depicts Audra and Pakora after the events of the book. I like to think they traveled the world together

Snowday
I tried capturing Audra's and Pakora's different personalities in this one. While Pakora is a little more serious, Audra is playful.

A Simple Stone
Chapter 2 cover.

A Simple Touch
Chapter 5 cover. Out of all of the chapter covers I made for the book, this one is by far my favorite.

A Simple Talk
Chapter 3 cover.

Morning Glory
Morning glories are a beautiful flower - whenever I look at them I always feel better.

The Stone from the Mountain
Audra settled as a stone in the mountains, sleeping for many years. It was very surprising when, upon her waking, an entire temple had sprung up around her.

The Hearth from the Home
When Pakora left home for the final time, Mother Vikos forbade the hearth to be lit for 7 days, even though it was the middle of the winter. When Pakora's sisters told her of this, she didn't believe it happened.

Overlook
This was one of the first full color images I made for TH&TS.

Original Cover TH&TS
This cover did not feel original or colorful enough and I eventually replaced it.

Before the Book
Before making a comic was even a possibility for the Audra and Pakora, I would use them as practice. This is one of those pieces.
Hostheart

The Bus Will Never Come
It's easier to deal with rain when your friend also doubles as an umbrella. Thanks, Mike.

Fishing
This piece was an excuse to draw some sunny scenery.

Vivisection
I wanted to make a fun diagram of Mike's tunnels, but it ended up looking a little gutsier than expected. Whoops.

Spring Cleaning
Cover for the short "Spring Cleaning"

Spring Cleaning

Memory of a Smaller Mike
Simon met Mike before he went through metamorphism, and came out the other end a giant organism-biome. It's funny to think Mike used to be the size of a golfball.
WOLA

WOLA Book 2 Cover
This is a favorite of mine. I love the colors and how it flows. Inked by B. Francis.

First Half
This is one half of a two-image piece. Kalolo's POV when leaving Eelp back home during fishing season. For the first time, he felt lonely.
Inked by B. Francis.

Second Half
This is one half of a two-image piece. Eelp's POV during Kalolo's fishing season. Feeling lonely, not for the first time.

Horizon
Kalolo spends his days simply: He works on his mussel farm, gets ready for fishing season, has philosophical moments staring out into the ocean.... Normal stuff.

Swimming Thoughts
I chose Kalolo to be my subject for underwater lighting practice and this is the piece that surfaced. The fish are his thoughts.

Culture Corner!
Cover for Culture Corner, WOLA's companion comic with world-building information. I like Todu and Ohna a lot as characters.
Inked by B. Francis.

Anniversary
If I'm remembering right we made this to celebrate a comic milestone.

Dreaming of Stars

Celebration~!
When the first book came out me and B. Francis set out to redraw some of our older pieces. This was one of the newer ones.

The Witch
Chapter cover for book 2. Eelp's bio-mother was quite the reveal. Inked by B. Francis

Concepts
Color tests and concept art for chapter covers. I wanted to try a lot of different things.

The New
In book 2, Eelp does many things he's only dreamed of doing (and some things he'd never even think of). Here, he's hopeful but anxious about his future.
